Distinguished and Famous people from Wynyard

🎭 Frederick Matthias Alexander

Frederick Matthias Alexander was born at Table Cape in 1869 and attended the local school before working and pursuing performance. Difficulties with his voice led him to observe his own habits of posture and movement, eventually developing the educational method known as the Alexander Technique. He later taught in mainland Australia and Britain, where his work gained an international following. The north-west Tasmanian connection is his birthplace and early education. His unusual career began with a performer's practical problem and developed into a method of studying how people use their bodies.

🏀 Carla Boyd

Carla Boyd was born at Wynyard in 1975 and became part of the generation that established the Opals among the leading women's basketball teams. She helped win the junior world title in 1993 before Olympic bronze at Atlanta in 1996 and silver at Sydney in 2000. The Atlanta medal was Australia's first Olympic basketball medal. Wynyard's connection is her birthplace, preceding a playing career associated with clubs and national teams elsewhere. Those beginnings give the town a genuine link with an important period of growth in Australian women's basketball.

🏉 Ray Rocher

Ray Rocher made an immediate impression playing senior football for Wynyard. In his first season, aged sixteen, he kicked the most goals in Tasmania’s North-West competition. He continued playing after work took him interstate, but chose a building-industry career rather than professional football. His later responsibilities ranged from managing construction businesses to heading the Master Builders’ Association of New South Wales. Wynyard’s connection is an actual club career and an unusually productive first senior season. It captures the young full forward before employment, family and industrial negotiations supplied the main demands on his time.
